1.2 General Duong Dinh Nghe, the hero who maintained national independence

Duong Dinh Nghe (874–937) is known as one of the nation's prominent historical figures, a chieftain of the Ai Chau region and an outstanding general during the post-Khuc period. Thanks to his intellect, bravery, and strategic prowess on the battlefield, he became a great symbol of the self-reliance spirit of ancient Vietnamese people.

He entered history with the feat of leading the rebel army and repelling the invading Nam Han army in the early 10th century. Particularly, in 931, along with over 3,000 volunteers from Ai Chau, he led troops north, liberated Dai La Citadel, defeated General Ly Tien, and annihilated Trinh Bao. This victory ended the period of direct domination by force from the North, opening an important turning point for the nation's process of self-governance.

After achieving this great feat, Duong Dinh Nghe proclaimed himself Pacification Commissioner, continuing the cause of the Khuc family. His contributions laid the foundation for Ngo Quyen's victory at Bach Dang in 938, ushering in a long period of independence for Vietnam after more than a thousand years of Chinese domination.
