1. Revealing the strategic location and role of Ham Rong Bridge

1.1. Geographical location and history of formation

Spanning across the gentle Ma River, Ham Rong Bridge is one of the prominent historical and cultural symbols of Thanh Hoa province. The bridge is located on the North-South railway line, about 5km north of Thanh Hoa city center, connecting Ham Rong ward and Hoang Son commune. The bridge's location is between two mountains, Rong and Ngoc, creating a strategic terrain that is both majestic and possesses special strategic value in both transportation and military aspects.

Ham Rong Bridge was first built in 1903, during the French colonial period, designed by French architects. With its steel arch structure without a central pillar, the bridge was once considered one of the most modern structures in Indochina at that time. In the middle of the bridge, there were railway tracks for trains, and on both sides, it was for cars and rudimentary vehicles, resembling Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi.

However, in 1946, the bridge was destroyed under the "scorched-earth" policy to prevent the advance of French troops. By 1962, the bridge's construction began again with the support of Soviet and Chinese experts. Three years later, in 1965, the work was officially completed and put into operation, becoming a strategic artery for traffic in the North.

After 1973, the bridge was restored with a length of over 150m, continuing to play a vital role in North-South trade. Today, Ham Rong Bridge is not only a key transportation work but also a tourist destination rich in historical value, where visitors can fully experience the indomitable spirit and pride of the land and people of Thanh Hoa.
